Load growth is back, and the reasons include the electrification of transport and heating, a wave of domestic factory construction, and the enormous power appetite of AI data centers.
Data centers are unusual customers. They run around the clock, cluster in specific regions, and demand firm, reliable power at scale — often hundreds of megawatts for a single campus. That combination puts generation and transmission owners in an unusually strong negotiating position. Below are three publicly traded companies that sit on different points of the utility spectrum, and how each one turns rising demand into a potential business advantage.
NextEra Energy: The Regulated-Plus-Renewables Hybrid
NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) is best understood as two businesses under one roof. One is Florida Power & Light, a regulated utility serving one of the fastest-growing states in the country. The other is NextEra Energy Resources, one of the largest developers of wind, solar, and battery storage in the world.
The regulated side captures demand growth in a slow, steady, and predictable way. Utilities earn a regulator-approved return on the capital they invest in poles, wires, and power plants. When customer count and load rise, the utility can justify more infrastructure spending — and that expanded asset base is what drives regulated earnings. A growing service territory is, in effect, a growing engine for rate-base investment.
The unregulated development arm plays a different role. As corporations sign long-term contracts to power data centers and factories, many want clean energy to meet sustainability commitments. NextEra builds and often owns those projects, selling the output under multi-year agreements. That gives it exposure to AI-driven demand without relying solely on the regulated rate case process.
The trade-off: NextEra's renewables business is capital-intensive and sensitive to interest rates and financing costs, and it carries meaningful debt to fund its build-out. The regulated utility provides ballast, but investors are effectively underwriting a large, ongoing construction program.
Vistra: The Merchant Power Play
Vistra (NYSE: VST) sits at the opposite end of the spectrum. It is an independent power producer — a merchant generator that owns a fleet of natural gas, nuclear, coal, and battery assets and sells electricity largely at market prices rather than through regulated rates.
That model is the most direct way to benefit from tightening supply and demand. When demand climbs faster than new supply comes online, wholesale power prices and capacity payments tend to rise, and merchant generators capture that upside on the plants they already own. There is no regulator capping the return. For a company with a large existing fleet, incremental demand can flow toward the bottom line without proportional new spending.
Vistra's acquisition of a nuclear fleet added a block of carbon-free, always-on generation — precisely the kind of firm power data-center operators prize. Its Texas concentration also matters, since the ERCOT market is both a hotbed of data-center and industrial growth and a market with real-time price volatility.
The flip side of merchant exposure is symmetry. Prices that can spike higher can also fall, and Vistra's earnings are inherently more variable than a regulated utility's. Weather, commodity prices, and plant outages all feed directly into results. Higher potential reward comes with higher potential volatility.
Constellation Energy: The Nuclear Anchor
Constellation Energy (NASDAQ: CEG) is the largest operator of nuclear power plants in the United States, and that identity defines its investment case. Nuclear plants produce large volumes of carbon-free electricity continuously, making them a natural match for hyperscale computing operators that need round-the-clock power and want to hit clean-energy targets.
That alignment has made nuclear generation a focal point of the data-center conversation. Some technology companies have pursued direct arrangements to source power from nuclear facilities, and Constellation's existing fleet gives it scarce, hard-to-replicate assets. New nuclear capacity takes many years and enormous capital to build, so owners of operating reactors hold a structural advantage as clean firm power grows scarcer.
Like Vistra, Constellation carries competitive-market exposure, so its results move with power prices and the terms it can secure on long-dated contracts. The strategic value of its nuclear base is real, but the stock's fortunes are tied to how durably strong demand — and clean-power premiums — turn out to be.
Regulated Versus Independent: Two Ways to Own the Same Trend
The core distinction runs through all three names. Regulated utilities like NextEra's Florida operation earn steady returns on invested capital and grow as their territories grow; the upside is dependable but capped by regulators. Independent producers like Vistra and Constellation sell into markets, so they capture more of the upside when supply is tight — and absorb more of the downside when it isn't.
Constellation and NextEra's renewable arm add a third wrinkle: the clean, firm power that many AI operators specifically want. That preference can translate into premium contract terms, but it also depends on corporate sustainability commitments holding firm.

The investable question is not whether electricity demand is rising — that shift appears well underway — but how much of it is durable and who captures the margin. Key signals include the pace of data-center construction, the length and pricing of power contracts utilities are signing, interest rates (which weigh heavily on capital-intensive builders), and regulatory decisions on rate base and market design.
Utilities are rarely the loudest way to play a technology boom, and they come with their own risks: heavy debt loads, commodity swings for merchants, and regulatory constraints for the regulated. But they sit upstream of the entire AI buildout, on the one input no data center can operate without. Whether that translates into durable returns depends on execution and on how long the demand surge lasts — the trade-off every investor in the space is ultimately weighing.
